NCAPA issues statement on Bipartisan Budget Act of 2015: We praised the passage of the Bipartisan Budget Act of 2015, legislation that will help ensure AANHPI communities have access to quality and affordable health care, equal education opportunities and fair credit and lending opportunities. Gregory Cendana appointed to D.C. Mayor’s Commission on Asian and Pacific Islander Affairs: NCAPA Chair & APALA Executive Director Gregory Cendana was appointed to the commission that advises D.C. Mayor Muriel Bowser on issues concerning the Asian American and Pacific Islander communities. Read more.

 Action for Health Justice provides resources to support health care enrollment: In preparation for the start of the 2016 open enrollment period on Nov. 1, Action for Health Justice, which includes NCAPA members APIAHF, AAPCHO and AAJC, is working to provide assistance and outreach to our communities. Their resources include a glossary translated into 12 Asian and Pacific Islander languages.  Read more.

NAPABA editorial calls for more diversity in legal profession: During the criminal trial regarding Sureshbhai Patel, a grandfather from India who was left partially paralyzed after an encounter with police, an attorney reportedly told the jury that Patel was responsible for his paralysis because those who come to the U.S. should “speak our language.” NAPABA President George C. Chen wrote in NBC Asian America that regardless of English proficiency, all people should have equal protection under the law. Read the editorial.

 SEARAC creates deportation guide for Southeast Asian Americans: The deportation guide helps non-citizens from Southeast Asian American communities understand the detention and deportation systems. Southeast Asia Resource Action Center and the American University Williams College of Law collaborated to create the guide, which can be downloaded here.

NAPCA granted funding to help AAPI Medicare beneficiaries: The National Asian Pacific Council on Aging received a $150,000 federal grant to provide technical assistance to serve Limited English Proficient Medicare beneficiaries. NAPCA will create an AAPI Medicare Resource Center for LEP AAPI older adults who are often socially, culturally and linguistically isolated. Read more.

 HND receives USDA funding: Hmong National Development received two USDA Office of Advocacy and Outreach federal grants. The funding will support Hmong farmers programs in Arkansas and Missouri as well as a training and education program for disadvantaged Hmong/Southeast Asian farmers.  APIASF celebrates 10th annual Scholarship Benefit: The Asian & Pacific Islander American Scholarship Fund held their Scholarship Benefit in New York Thursday evening to celebrate the accomplishments of their scholars and partners. Among the honorees were NCAPA members APAICS, SEARAC and OCA.

 AAJC promotes U.S. citizenship: As part of the New Americans Campaign, AAJC partnered with the Asian Pacific American Legal Resource Center to hold a Citizenship Fair on Saturday for AAPIs in the D.C. metro area. The fair focused on the benefits of becoming a U.S. citizen and provided resources on how to naturalize.

 NAPABA names Navdeep Singh policy director: Navdeep was featured in India West for being named the new policy director of the National Asian Pacific American Bar Association. Read the feature.
