News and Updates

NCAPA urges Supreme Court to review President’s executive immigration action: NCAPA and several member groups were disappointed with this week’s decision from the U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals for the Fifth Circuit to block President Obama’s executive immigration action. The following NCAPA member organizations released responses: AAJC, NAKASEC,OCA, NAPABA, SAALT and APALA.

NCAPA requests federal funding for programs impacting AANHPI communities: NCAPA sent a letter to Congressional leaders highlighting top priorities as Congress works on appropriating federal funding on programs related to language access and diversity.

Supporting language access in the Affordable Care Act: NCAPA, APIAHF and AAPCHO submitted comments this week to the Department of Health and Human Service’s Office for Civil Rights on the proposed rule to implement Section 1557 of the ACA regarding nondiscrimination. This would establish provisions to ensure language assistance services are provided to AANHPI communities

Mee Moua named among most powerful women in Washington: President & CEO of AAJC Mee Moua, a NCAPA board member, was named as one of the most powerful women in Washington in Washingtonian.

CNHA applauds FCC action to reduce phone rates for inmates: The Council for Native Hawaiian Advancement thanked FCC commissioners for taking the first steps in reducing phone fees and rates for inmates, so that they are able to reconnect with families and have access to other services important to rehabilitation.

Kathy Ko Chin writes on obesity epidemic: In The Hill, APIAHF’s Kathy Ko Chin wrote about treating obesity in AANHPI communities, low activity rates in our communities and how projects like the APIAHF-funded Project I-CAN focuses on physical activity for AANHPI children.

Campaigns

Letter to AG Lynch to investigate potential profiling of Asian American scientists: Sign ons due by 12pm MONDAY, Nov. 16.

NCAPIP: Tomorrow (Sat, Nov. 14) is World Diabetes Day.Screen at 23 focuses on the importance of screening for diabetes in the Asian American community, as our communities are at risk for type 2 diabetes at the body mass index of 23.

APPEAL: Promote the #GreatAsianAmericanSmokeouton Thurs, Nov. 19 to raise awareness about the smoking rate in AANHPI communities in coordination with the American Lung Association’s Great American Smokeout effort.

APIASF: “We Are Not The Same” or #NotTheSame celebrates the unique stories of AAPI students and challenges stereotypes. Become a partner and send your logo to [email protected].

WHIAAPI: #ActToChange addresses bullying in the AAPI community and provides tools to prevent this problem. NCAPA and more than 20 members supported the campaign. Take the pledge and participate in a live event in LA on Nov. 21.
