Asian American and Pacific Islander Coalition Welcomes Federal Court Decision to Uphold Affirmative Action at Harvard

Washington, DC— in response to the federal court decision to reject the plaintiff’s claim that Harvard discriminated against Asian American students through its race-conscious admission policies in the Students for Fair Admissions, Inc. (SFFA) v. Harvard case, the National Council of Asian Pacific Americans (NCAPA) issued the following statement.

"We welcome the determination that Harvard did not intentionally discriminate against Asian American applicants in its admission policies. This decision reaffirms the fact that all students of color, including Asian American students benefit from race-conscious admission policies.

While we believe that every institution should continue to ensure their admissions processes are fair, we reject the notion that the answer is dismantling affirmative action. This decision is a clear signal that affirmative action should be protected, and upholds its constitutionality.

To be very clear: The majority of Asian Americans support admission policies that support diversity. And so long as efforts continue to use, or co-opt our communities as a wedge between other communities of color, our coalition will stand ready to fight."
