NCAPA calls for more disaggregated data in federal government: NCAPA and six member organizations submitted comment letters to the Office of Management and Budget to push for disaggregated data for Asian Americans, Native Hawaiians and Pacific Islanders, and to collect, analyze, report and disseminate this data. Disaggregated data is necessary in dismantling the “model minority” myth.

NCAPA and CAAM host preview and discussion of The Chinese Exclusion Act: Last Wednesday, NCAPA and member the Center for Asian American Media hosted a special preview and discussion on the upcoming PBS documentary, “The Chinese Exclusion Act.” Directors Ric Burns and Li-Shin Yu, South Asian Americans Leading Together’s (SAALT) Lakshmi Sridaran and Muslim Advocate’s Brenda Abdelall sat on a panel to discuss how the 1882 law impacts American society and the parallels between the past and the anti-Muslim rhetoric and policy proposals we see today. NCAPA urges secretaries of state to preserve voting rights: NCAPA and six of its member organizations supported the Leadership Conference on Civil and Human Rights letter to secretaries of state to preserve voting rights in the first presidential election in 50 years without the full protections of the Voting Rights Act.

OCA condemns racist remark in Senate debate in Illinois: OCA released a statement that it is disappointed with statements on the Illinois campaign trail discrediting a candidate’s identity and lineage of military service due to her Asian American background.

More than 130 AAPI groups seek further action following racist Fox News segment: NCAPA, OCA, Asian Americans Advancing Justice - LA and Reappropriate were among those who met with Fox News executives last week to present a community letter signed by 134 organizations in response to the racist “Watters World: Chinatown Edition” segment that aired on The O’Reilly Factor. The Asian American Journalists Association facilitated the meeting.

Akbarali Appointed to Superior Court of Justice in Toronto: SABA North America congratulated Jasmine Akbarali on her appointment as a judge of the Superior Court of Justice in Toronto. Jasmine Akbarali has become the first South Asian woman appointed to a provincial superior court in Canada.

APIAVote released in-language pages and videos for election protection: Share and watch videos in English, Chinese, Tagalog, Korean and Vietnamese about voting rights for AAPIs. This page also features APIAVote voting PSAs from the cast of Fresh Off the Boat and more.

Asian American voter guides: NCAPA members have issued voter guides, ranging from general issues impacting the Asian American community to guides for AAPI women and on LGBT rights. See them all here from AAJC, APALA, NAPAWF, NQAPIA and SAALT.

Meet some AAPI candidates running for political office: CAAM compiled the AAPI candidates running this election, with help from a fellow NCAPA member, APAICS, who has a database of AAPI candidates.
