NCAPA's weekly roundup of news and events

  • Welcome to our 35th member of NCAPA: Payu-ta is a support system that promotes and strengthens member organizations' capacity and advocates for a progressive and sustainable Guam community. Please join us in welcoming them to the NCAPA family!
  • NCAPA launches brown bag series: NCAPA held our first lunch series where policy managers Kelly Honda and Nisha Ramachandran presented an introduction of NCAPA’s mission, blueprint and plans for the brown bag lunch series. Through these brown bags, NCAPA will highlight their members and the work they are doing for AAPI communities.
  • All Students Count: On Wednesday, the Hirono-Heller amendment was introduced on the Senate floor. There were countless efforts to support data disaggregation from NCAPA’s education committee, students, organizations and community members through social media (#AllStudentsCount) and letters to their Senators. The amendment did not pass, and the final count was 47-50.
  • OCA hosts annual convention: At their annual national convention last week in San Francisco, Calif., OCA sought to unify AAPIs. More than 500 advocates, including youth, young professionals, professionals, sponsors, speakers, community members and others joined the convention to empower the next generation of community leaders and advocates. OCA also partnered with Antennas Direct and the Chinatown Community Development Center (CCDC) and gave away HDTV antennas to the San Francisco Bay Area’s low-income Asian population to connect them with free in-language programing. Along with the chapter and gala awards, OCA also raised money for a local school.
  • WHIAAPI Youth Forum 2015: On Thursday, NCAPA interns Angie and Tiffany attended the WHIAAPI Youth Forum. They were able to engage in discussion with AAPI youth leaders from different areas of the country on issues they felt were most pertinent to the AAPI community in their college campuses and in their regions. Participants also were able to hear from AAPI leaders talk about their work in their respective fields, along with why it is important for this generation of rising leaders to engage in these discussions.
