NCAPA Members in the News:
NCAPA members honor the 50th anniversary of the Voting Rights Act: Since 1965, the Voting Rights Act gave the right to vote for communities of color. However, restrictions and barriers prevent our community from voting. Read more information about the Asian American perspective here in a report from Asian Americans Advancing Justice | AAJC or through the conversation with #RestoreTheVRA and @NCAPAtweets.
JACL fellow donates uniform to Smithsonian: On July 30, JACL Daniel K. Inouye Fellow, Craig Shimizu, donated his uniform that he wore when he was in Afghanistan to the Smithsonian's National Museum of American History. Shimizu’s uniform will become part of the Museum's collection of uniforms and represent Asian Americans and Japanese Americans who served in the Afghanistan conflict. Read more here.
Remembering Oak Creek: On Aug. 5, we remember the six lives that were lost three years ago after a shooting occurred inside a Sikh Temple in Oak Creek, Wis. Communities gathered to remember the victims and address the need for justice and awareness. Read more information here.
AAPA convention held this week in Toronto: On Wednesday, the Asian American Psychological Association held their annual conference. The theme was “Perspectives Across the Lifespan - Toward a more Holistic Understanding of Asian American Psychology.” Topics discussed included mental health outreach, visibility and invisibility of Asian American faculty and a discussion of “Fresh off the Boat.”
