NCAPA responds to the State of the Union: NCAPA responded positively to the President’s final State of the Union address Tuesday evening, and membersAPIAHF, APIAVote, AAJC, APALA, CAPACD, NAPAWF, , OCA, and SEARAC had statements of response, highlighted here. In case you missed them, the following items related to the State of the Union were also released this week:

• The #StateofRace Twitter Town Hall prior to the speech was led by the Advancement Project and co-hosted by NCAPA, APIAHF, and other W.K. Kellogg Foundation anchor partners. The town hall featured a discussion on racial justice and reached an estimated 1.5 million people.

• Blog by Christopher Kang - The State of Asian Americans and Pacific Islanders Is Growing Stronger--But Not for the Reasons Many Think: Read and share the blog about the strength of our community’s growing electorate on Huffington Post and/or Medium.

• Blog by AAJC - The State of AAPIs:Read AAJC’s piece about what the President has done regarding issues of interest to our communities.

APIAHF welcomes President Obama’s Medicaid expansion proposal: The Asian & Pacific Islander American Health Forum supported the President’s 2017 budget proposal, which would provide three years of full federal funding to states choosing to expand Medicaid.

NAKASEC urges Supreme Court to take up DAPA/DACA+ Case: NAKASEC joined families, children, faith leaders, and immigrant rights organizations today for a press conference in front of the Supreme Court to urge the court to take up the case temporarily blocking the implementation of DACA+ and DAPA.

NCAPA stands against anti-Muslim hate, xenophobia and bigotry: NCAPA organizations united against anti-Muslim hate and have released statements in solidarity.Read them all here, including a new statement this week from NAKASEC. Deadline - Tuesday, Jan. 19 @ 3 p.m. ET: SEARAC- Support Syrian and Iraqi Refugees. Sign on to SEARAC’s letter ahead of H.R. 4038, "The American Security against Foreign Enemies (SAFE) Act," legislation passed by the House of Representatives last November, blocking the resettlement of Syrian and Iraqi refugees.

NCAPIP - Screen at 23 focuses on the importance of screening for diabetes in the Asian American community, as our communities are at risk for type 2 diabetes at the body mass index of 23.

SABA North America Foundation Grant Applications (Deadline: March 1): SABA North America is committed to increasing the capacity of community-based organizations to respond to the legal needs and uphold the civil rights and liberties of the South Asian community and marginalized communities across North America. To foster this work, the SABA North America Foundation, a 501(c)(3) not-for-profit corporation, awards grants of up to $5,000 in the following areas:

• Domestic Violence

• Immigration Rights

• Hate Crimes, Discrimination and Racial Profiling

• Community Access to Justice

Appointments Project: The White House Presidential Personnel Office (responsible for presidential appointments)  is continuing to develop slates for principal, assistant to principal and functional positions. NCAPA and APAICS continue to work with PPO in diversity outreach and are seeking individuals who are interested in an appointment positions for various levels, roles and background experience for agencies (e.g. speech writers, digital background, policy, etc.). Please help us to identify ideal appointment candidates who are AAPI. NAPABA Pro Bono General Counsel Program: This program provides AAPI organizations pro bono legal advice and counsel that they cannot afford. Get the application for organization and application for attorneys.
