NCAPA Members Oppose President Trump's "Buy American, Hire American" Executive Order
This week, President Trump signed an executive order intended to revise the H-1B visa program and discourage hiring low-wage workers from other countries. Asian Americans Advancing Justice | AAJC and South Asian Americans Leading Together rejected the order, saying it further pits U.S.-born and foreign workers against each other and demonstrates bias against immigrant workers.
NAPABA Files Amicus Brief Supporting Block of Revised Muslim Ban
The National Asian Pacific American Bar Association (NAPABA) led 43 Asian Pacific American bar associations in filing an amicus brief in the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Fourth Circuit to support the preliminary injunction, or block, of President Trump’s March 6, 2017, revised executive order barring individuals from six Muslim-majority countries from entering the United States.
Souen Chheng of #ReleaseMN8 Continues His Fight to Stay in the U.S. amidst the Next Round of Deportations to Cambodia
While Cambodian refugee Soeun Chheng narrowly escaped deportation last month, he is currently detained in Arizona as an immigration judge reviews his case. Chheng is part of the “Minnesota 8,” a group of Cambodian Americans who were detained by Immigration and Customs Enforcement. Learn more from the Southeast Asia Resource Action Center (SEARAC) about Chheng’s story and how individuals can help Chheng and other Cambodian Americans.
CAAM’s “Muslim Youth Voices” Receives Grant to Amplify Project’s Stories
The Doris Duke Foundation for Islamic Arts’ Building Bridges Program (DDFIA) provided resources for the Center for Asian American Media (CAAM) to amplify the stories and videos created by American Muslim youth participants of CAAM’s Muslim Youth Voices project. This will allow CAAM to hold public screenings and discussion across the country.
JACL and OCA Hold 2017 Leadership Summit
The Japanese American Citizens League (JACL) and OCA - Asian Pacific American Advocates completed a joint leadership summit this week to introduce community leaders nationwide to policy-making on a national level.
JACL Appoints Interim Executive Director Stephanie Nitahara
JACL announced the appointment of Stephanie Nitahara as Interim Executive Director. Nitahara has served as JACL staff for nearly five years at the Pacific Southwest Regional Office.
SAALT to Host the 6th National South Asian Summit in Response to Growing Challenges Faced by South Asian, Muslim, Sikh, and Hindu Communities
South Asian Americans Leading Together (SAALT) will hold a summit over the weekend to address the escalating attacks and challenges of South Asians, Muslims, Sikhs, and Hindus nationwide in the 2017 National South Asian Summit in D.C.
