NCAPA Applauds Senate Defeat of Anti-Immigrant Bills

The National Council of Asian Pacific Americans (NCAPA) applauds today’s Senate votes to defeat Senator Toomey’s Stop Dangerous Sanctuary Cities Act (S.3100) and Senator Cruz’s Stop Illegal Reentry Act or Kate’s Law (S.2193).

NCAPA sent a letter to Majority Leader Mitch McConnell and Democratic Leader Harry Reid to urge Senators to oppose these bills. NCAPA also joined 169 other national and state level immigrant, civil rights, and labor organizations in opposing this legislation and demanding comprehensive immigration reform.*

“These bills wrongly scapegoat immigrants,” said NCAPA National Director Christopher Kang. “They would have damaged the relationship between local law enforcement and their communities and wasted billions of dollars without making anyone safer. We are pleased that the Senate has upheld public safety, and NCAPA will continue to urge our elected leaders to take action against dangerous anti-immigrant bills.”

*NCAPA members who joined the Immigrant Legal Resource Center letter are: Asian Americans Advancing Justice - AAJC, Asian Pacific American Labor Alliance, AFL-CIO (APALA), National Korean American Service and Education Consortium (NAKASEC), OCA - Asian Pacific American Advocates, South Asian Americans Leading Together (SAALT) and Southeast Asia Resource Action Center (SEARAC).
