A LOOK AHEAD
On Monday, Senate Republicans were forced to abandon plans to vote on their version of a healthcare repeal bill after two more Republicans joined the 50 Senators already opposed to it. Senate Leader McConnell is now pushing forward on a last-ditch effort to repeal the Affordable Care Act without a replacement plan, despite Republican Senators opposing this incessant effort to kick over 30 million Americans off their health insurance plans. While this vote is expected to fail, President Trump has also indicated his willingness to let the health insurance marketplaces fail through either deliberate sabotage or malicious neglect. It remains appalling to see this level of cynicism and disregard for the health of millions of Americans in the highest offices in the country.
Another major priority of the Trump Administration is an overhaul of the tax code. A House committee unveiled a plan Tuesday morning that would reduce tax rates and simplify the tax code. The budget calls for a $621.5 billion national defense budget for 2018 and $511 billion for nondefense spending. It also calls for at least $203 billion in cuts over a decade in “mandatory” spending on programs such as Medicare and Social Security.

South Asian Bar Association of North America (SABA North America) Holds 14th Annual Convention in Washington, D.C.
SABA North America held their 14th Annual Convention on July 13-16. Highlights included panels focusing on topics ranging from public interest to litigation and political law. Additionally, SABA North America hosted their inaugural Lobby Day, where attendees advocated for funding for the Legal Services Corporation, supporting the End Racial Profiling Act and the Access to Counsel Act, and opposing the Muslim & Refugee Ban.
