NCAPA groups urge Senate Republicans to #DoYourJob: This week, Judge Sri Srinivasan was identified as a top contender for the Supreme Court vacancy. New items from our members this week include:

  • AAJC’s Change.org petition pushing the AAPI community to call for the Senate Judiciary Committee to hold hearings and vote on President Obama’s Supreme Court nominee: bit.ly/AAJCSCOTUS

  • NAPABA led a letter of diverse bar associations to Senate Judiciary Chairman Grassley and Ranking Member Leahy strongly urging the Senate to uphold its Constitutional duty.

  • In a statement, SALDEF urged the White House to nominate the first Asian American Supreme Court justice.

NCAPA and members file amicus briefs for immigrant rights: NQAPIA led a brief to inform the Supreme Court of the unique challenges LGBT undocumented immigrants face and to support the President’s immigration executive actions. NCAPA and 10 of its members also joined the National Immigration Law Center brief supporting the actions. Oral arguments for the case U.S. v. Texas are scheduled for April 18.  Website for undocumented women launches on International Women’s Day: The We Belong Together campaign, of which NAPAWF and the National Domestic Workers Alliance are co-anchors, launched a website called StepForward to help undocumented women understand their rights. The website is available in English and Spanish, with more languages on the way.

Hepatitis on the Hill advocates for hepatitis B and C issues: AAPCHO was part of the Hepatitis on the Hill efforts this week to advocate for increased funding of prevention and treatment of hepatitis B and C. AAPIs are at a high risk for hepatitis B, which can lead to liver cancer.

Fact sheet gives snapshot of behavioral health issues of AANHPI boys and men: The Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration (SAMSHA) released a brief that highlights the behavioral health challenges of AANHPI boys and men. AAPA President Kevin Nadal worked with SAMSHA to produce the fact sheet, available for download here.

NQAPIA’s Glenn Magpantay honored with Impact Award: Gay City News awarded NQAPIA Executive Director Glenn Magpantay with a 2016 Impact Award.

Three More Judges Said to Be Vetted for Supreme Court: The New York Times identified Sri Srinivasan as a top contender and interviewed NCAPA’s Chris Kang about how the White House has engaged with the AAPI community.

A Background Artist Comes to the Fore in CAAMFest’s ‘Tyrus:’ KQED featured Tyrus Wong, one of the artists behind 1942’s “Bambi.” Wong is the subject of CAAM’s opening night film for this year’s CAAMFest.

Immigration Rights Website Geared Toward Undocumented Women Launches: NBC Asian America spotlights We Belong Together’s new website, womenstepforward.org, for women’s immigration rights and legal options.

Asian Pacific American museums participate in Museum Day: This Saturday, March 12, selected museums around the country will offer free admission as part of “Museum Day Live!” The Smithsonian Asian Pacific American Center compiled a list of Asian Pacific American museums for people to consider going to to learn more about the history of AAPIs and women of color.

OCA summer intern program requests: OCA is accepting requests if your organization would like to have a summer intern from their program. The program runs from June 6 to Aug. 12. (Deadline: March 18)

Deadline extended - SABA North America Foundation Grants: SABA North america is offering grants to develop and fund public interest projects that benefit the South Asian American community. (Deadline: March 15)

CAAM Media Fund: CAAM’s Media Fund is taking submissions for documentary projects to provide funding to independent producers for national public television. (Deadline: March 21)

Call for volunteers for NAKASEC: NAKASEC is seeking volunteers who are interested in engaging with the Korean & Asian American communities in Northern Virginia. Civic engagement volunteers will assist with naturalization clinics, voter registration and education activities, precinct walking, phone banking, and general voter outreach in the community.  Immigrant rights volunteers will assist with DACA outreach, education, and application assistance.

3rd Annual Art as a Voice call for submissions: The Asian/Pacific Islander Domestic Violence Resource Project is looking for poetry, music, visual art, craft or objects from one’s own cultural identity as part of their annual Art as a Voice event to speak out against abuse. If you have questions or submissions, contact Marie Ramos at [email protected] by April 14. The event will take place April 21, and they are also looking for volunteers. (Deadline: April 14)

Appointments Project: The White House Presidential Personnel Office is continuing to develop slates for principal, assistant to principal and functional positions. NCAPA and APAICS continue to work with PPO in diversity outreach and are seeking individuals who are interested in an appointment positions for various levels, roles and background experience for agencies. Please help us to identify ideal appointment candidates who are AAPI.
