NCAPA, SEARAC, APALA launch #AAPI4SentencingReform: Today marks three months since the Senate Judiciary Committee advanced the Sentencing Reform and Corrections Act, S. 2123, but the full Senate has not yet taken the legislation up for consideration. With SEARAC and APALA, we launched #AAPI4SentencingReform to show support from our communities for criminal justice reform. NCAPA health groups help AAPIs #GetCovered: To prepare for the Jan. 31 deadline to enroll for health coverage, NCAPA and its members participated in the AAPI Health Week of Action. Action for Health Justice, of which members APIAHF, AAPCHO and AAJC are a part, highlighted resources such as their health enrollment glossary and a “Coverage to Care” toolkit. The glossary includes health care terms in 12 Asian and Pacific Islander languages. APIAHF’s Kathy Ko Chin also published two op-eds, AANHPIs Need Health Insurance Before the Jan. 31 Deadline and Language Services in Health Care are a Life-line for Diverse Communities.

Supreme Court to hear case on immigration executive actions: We praised the Supreme Court Tuesday for deciding to hear the case challenging President Obama’s immigration executive actions establishing DAPA and expanding DACA. AAJC, APIAHF, OCA and APALA also had reactions to the announcement, and NAKASEC was part of a group that urged the Supreme Court to hear the case.

Anti-refugee bill blocked by Senate: NCAPA and member SEARAC praised the Senate Wednesday for blocking the so-called SAFE Act, H.R. 4038, which would have effectively halted Syrian and Iraqi refugees from being resettled in the U.S. SEARAC also led a letter of support for Syrian and Iraqi refugees.

NAPAWF, APIAHF mark 43 years of Roe v. Wade: Today is the 43rd anniversary of the Supreme Court decision that gave women the right to have legal abortions in the U.S. To address challenges to abortion and reproductive rights, NAPAWF marked the anniversary by pushing out statistics that show AAPIs support abortion access--78 percent support some form of legal abortion, according the 2012 National Asian American Survey. Follow the conversation with #Weareinthe78%, #Roe43, and #ReclaimRoe and read APIAHF’s statement about how they are continuing to advance women’s health. On a related note, NAPAWF’s Miriam Yeung and New York City Council Member Margaret Chin wrote a joint op-ed Stand Against Racism, Protect Asian American Women’s Health.

SABA North America Foundation Grant Applications (Deadline: March 1): SABA North America is committed to increasing the capacity of community-based organizations to respond to the legal needs and uphold the civil rights and liberties of the South Asian community and marginalized communities across North America. To foster this work, the SABA North America Foundation, a 501(c)(3) not-for-profit corporation, awards grants of up to $5,000 in the following areas:

AT&T Aspire Accelerator Grant: The Aspire Accelerator is open to any venture, organization or company that is using technology to foster student success, and selected organizations will receive a $100,000 investment and an additional $25,000 to cover program expenses.
