APIAVote announces participants of 2016 Presidential Election Forum: APIAVote and the Asian American Journalists Association announced this weekend that President Bill Clinton, Libertarian presidential nominee former Gov. Gary Johnson, and several members of the Congressional Asian Pacific American Caucus will address Friday’s Presidential Election Forum in Las Vegas. A surrogate from Donald Trump’s campaign has been invited. NCAPA is a partner organization for this election forum.

AAPI leaders convene in Seattle area to build movement against criminalization and deportation: Last week, NCAPA members APALA and SEARAC joined 1Love Movement and Asian Prisoner Support Committee to organize more than 40 AAPI activists, along with prisoners at the Monroe Correctional Complex, to gather in the Seattle area for a grassroots convening action to address mass incarceration and deportation in the AAPI community. The AAPI prisoner population has grown drastically since the 1990s.

AAPA holds convention with theme “Beyond Yellow Borders:” The Asian American Psychological Association convened in Denver this week, where the focus was to examine identity. The convention was co-sponsored by a fellow NCAPA member, the National Asian American Pacific Islander Mental Health Association (NAAPIMHA). AAPA President Kevin Nadal was honored with the 2016 Early Career Achievement Award. More highlights are available on social media under #AAPA2016.

NaFFAA conference engages Filipino Americans: The National Federation of Filipino American Associations held its conference in King of Prussia, Pa., and among the discussions was empowering Filipino Americans to vote. Vice President of the Philippines Leni Robredo was among the notable guests who spoke to attendees

Remembering Oak Creek: Last Friday, Aug. 5, marked four years since the massacre at the Sikh Temple of Wisconsin. APALA’s statement showed solidarity with Sikh, Muslim, Arab, and South Asian communities, who continue to face post-9/11 backlash and discrimination.

ESSA webinar offers instructions on public comment to executive branch: NCAPA’s education committee posted its webinar that provides instructions on how to provide public comment for the Every Student Succeeds Act. The webinar can also be used for providing comments in a variety of instances. It is available to view on the NCAPA website.

APIASF launches website to serve AAPI college students: The Asian & Pacific Islander American Scholarship Fund launched AANAPISI.net to share successes and resources of institutions and organzations serving AAPI college students.

NCAPA wraps up summer brown bag series: The final NCAPA brown bag of summer 2016 featured guest speaker Ben de Guzman, who spoke to attendees about being both AAPI and LGBTQ and addressed issues such as how to talk to your AAPI families. Thank you to all the speakers and attendees this summer!
