AAJC and NAPAWF Applaud Federal Court Decision Blocking Trump’s Attack on Sanctuary Cities
This week, San Francisco Judge William H. Orrick issued a temporary injunction to President Trump’s executive order that would withhold federal funds from “sanctuary cities.” Advancing Justice | AAJC and the National Asian Pacific American Women’s Forum (NAPAWF) applauded this ruling in support of immigrant families.
Little Noticed Supreme Court Case Could Have Major Impact on Naturalized U.S. Citizens
The U.S. Supreme Court heard oral arguments on Wednesday in Maslenjak v. United States to determine if an immaterial false statement or omission in an immigration document or status proceeding can lead to criminal prosecution and revocation of citizenship. Advancing Justice | AAJC in partnership with The National Association of Latino Elected and Appointed Officials (NALEO) led more than 70 organizations filing an amicus brief to explain the chilling effect it could have on the 8.5 million adults eligible for naturalization.
Senators Urge Continuation of Program that Reunites Filipino World War II Veterans with Their Families
Senators Mazie K. Hirono (D-Hawaii), Dianne Feinstein (D-Calif.), Tim Kaine (D-Va.), Catherine Cortez Masto (D-Nev.), and Kamala Harris (D-Calif.) urged President Trump to continue the implementation of the Filipino World War II Veterans Parole Program, which reunites eligible Filipino veterans with their families. NCAPA, Advancing Justice | AAJC, and the National Federation of Filipino American Federations (NaFFAA) were quoted in strong support of continuing this program.
SAALT Holds National South Asian Summit
South Asian Americans Leading Together (SAALT) led a South Asian Summit last weekend that convened advocates and allies around the country to respond to the rise in hate violence, xenophobic rhetoric and anti-immigrant sentiment. See highlights from the weekend with the hashtag #United4Action.
NAPABA, SABA Support the Nomination of Judge Amul Thapar for the Sixth Circuit Court of Appeals
The National Asian Pacific American Bar Association (NAPABA) and South Asian Bar Association of North America (SABA) submitted testimony to the Senate Judiciary Committee expressing their strong support for Judge Amul R. Thapar’s nomination to the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Sixth Circuit.
NAKASEC Hosts Voter Registration Drives in Virginia Ahead of June Primaries
The National Korean American Service & Education Consortium (NAKASEC) registered voters and shared information on this year’s General Election in Virginia over the past week. NAKASEC will continue to register and canvass Korean and Asian American voters to encourage them to go to the polls on Tuesday, June 13. Online voter registration is available until the deadline at vote.virginia.gov. For questions or assistance for voter registration in Korean, please contact NAKASEC at 703-256-2208.
